The Côtes de Bourg is one of the prettiest parts of the Bordeaux wine region, and Château Rousselle, with its beautiful swimming pool above the vines is a popular place to visit - and stay. Our supplier’s exclusive Côtes de Bourg is a fresh and full-flavoured wine which is bright ruby in colour. It has a cherry bouquet with ripe blackcurrants, and a touch of liquorice and chocolate on the palate.
Our supplier first opened this very vineyard in Bordeaux. People had been asking for it for long enough and ever since their first visit to Bordeaux in 1985 they had been searching for a vineyard like this. They had visited dozens of domaines throughout the region, from Blaye to Bergerac and from Pauillac to Pomerol. It is certainly true to say that this region had proved the hardest yet for them to find that exlusive combination of quality wine, great value, warm welcome and joie de vivre that are the cornerstones of our supplier - 3D Wines.
So why did they choose the Côtes de Bourg for their first vineyard in Bordeaux? Well, this is the region they first visited all those years ago, and although it is not the best known, its star is rising. Watch out for a lot of development here over the next 10-15 years as Bordeaux starts to seriously tackle the competition from the New World - and be happy you discovered it first! Like most of the best things in France, the French like to keep it to themselves - most of the wine from the individual châteaux of the Côtes de Bourg is sold to private customers in France.
You will not be disappointed with Château Rousselle. Vincent Lemaitre has spent the last few years pouring boundless energy and enthusiasm into renovating this attractive property in the Côtes de Bourg. He has ripped out the old chai, installed new winemaking equipment, renovated the château and furnished three lovely chambres d'hôtes bedrooms in an outbuilding adjacent to the chai. We would certainly advise you stay here at the château when you visit, but do book early as they are very, very popular.
Exclusive Burgundy Vine Rental – White £125
The Drouins’ winemaking combines the best of traditional methods with contemporary expertise. Wines from the appellation of Pouilly-Fuissé are rich and sumptuous and our exclusive Pouilly-Fuissé is no exception. Their wines regularly win awards and many wine experts have long advocated their merits.
Domaine du Vieux Puits is in Vergisson, one of five villages which make up the famous appellation of Pouilly-Fuissé. It lies about 7 miles due west of Mâcon, and sits comfortably astride the saddle between the two great rocks of Vergisson and Solutré. The soil here is rich in the alkaline clay so loved by the Chardonnay grape. Its best vineyards are about 1200ft above sea level and face northwest, thus making the wines from Vergisson more refreshing by adding that extra dash of acidity, so vital to the balance of good wine.
The Drouin family have been winemakers in Vergisson for three generations. Thierry and Corinne Drouin farm 15 acres of vines: 10 for Pouilly-Fuissé, and 5 for Mâcon, both red and white. Vergisson wines are generally little known in the UK, so we were delighted to read in an article by Michael Schuster in WINE magazine: "The number of quality grower-bottlers from Vergisson has increased significantly over the past decade. To date the quality of its wines has remained relatively unsung, yet to judge by what is now available, Vergisson can claim to make wines that are every bit as good as the best."
Fabulous Burgundy Vine Rental – Red and White £100
Our supplier first met Jean-Paul and Marguerite Ragot in 1988. They are 4th generation winemakers in the appellation of Givry, with the 5th generation - son Nicolas - already working full time with his parents. The appellation of Givry surrounds the small town from which it takes its name, about 30km south of Beaune in Burgundy. The area is known as the Côte Chalonnaise after the port of Chalon-sur-Saône to the east. The hills, although more broken and irregular here, are an extension of the famous Côte de Beaune to the north. The grape varieties too are the same: Pinot Noir for red and Chardonnay for white. However, red wine predominates, and the fact that Domaine Ragot offers both red and white is something of a rarity. The Ragots have recently extended their chai and wine-cellar and the domaine now offers excellent facilities for receiving and vinifying the grapes, as well as ageing the wine in the new barrel cellar.
Just round the corner from the domaine, the Ragots have a large gîte which is available for rent by Vine owners.
